Back to life, back to reality…

01 Sep

Well, with the joys of a labor day yard party still ahead of me, it’s a little easier to face the fact that I’ll be heading downtown to the life of the Corporate Cubicle world. It was great spending the first 6 weeks of Evan’s life working from home, I feel as if I was able to form a nice strong connection with Evan before I had to disappear for a half a day everyday. I got to see a great many firsts, and get a pretty good grasp on his signals and attempts at communication. Thankfully, Jeanette is only going to be working one day a week for the next 4-5 weeks, leaving Evan in good hands.

I will say that I’m not entirely disappointed with having to head back to the Minneapple. It’ll be nice to get some “alone time” on the bus and catch up on some reading, get back into a regular schedule, be able to hit the Gym on the way home, have my regular morning coffee, and see my coworker’s (generally) happy faces.

Of course, I will miss the little guy.. after all, with a face like this…

Who wouldn’t?

Not to be pedantic, but I’ll make one point about your post: you have it exactly backwards. You’re leaving real life and going to a make-believe world. It takes a while to ‘get it’, but there’s nothing more real than time spent with your kids. Think of it this way – in a few years, nothing you do at work today will matter. It will be forgotten, and disappear, and no one will care. The time you spend with your children, on the other hand, that makes a ripple through time that will outlive you.

That said, it sure is nice to be able to function like normal. To paraphrase Cypher, this may not be real, but I’ll take it over reality some days :)

Although this would be an excellent situation to begin the discussion of what in life is truly “real”, I tend to agree comlpetely.

The past 7 weeks working from home and spending quality time with Evan were well worth the extra effort and time away from the office. I’m actually quite surprised at how few fathers take a significant amount of time away from the office/workplace to bond with their new kid. Granted, I’m lucky enough to have a boss that supports me enough to allow for it, and many people could probably lose their job attempting it, or at least blow their chances for promotion.

As for a return to reality, the subject simply came across that way because I couldn’t think of any other more appropriate song lyrics regarding a return to the corporate work environment. ACDC – Highway to Hell perhaps? *wink* (Seriously though, I do love my job.. but I’m a Gen X’er.. I’m supposed to be slightly dystopian.. right?)

No way man, we still have quality test studies in the office from programs we use written in DOS from the 80s. There is a huge possibility that something you do today will get swept into the lost current swirl of technology and still be around in 20 years. :)

That said, I’m just glad because then John might actually get in some more timely blogs from work.
